We were instantly smitten by this tastefully restored olive oil mill, built of traditional stone and dating back to 1895. Surrounded by forests and boasting panoramic sea views, Gaia enjoys a quintessentially rural setting and yet is only 500m from village amenities, 2.5km from the beach and 4km from the many excellent restaurants of Fiscardo harbour.
Looking to establish a provenance for years to come and determined to retain the rustic charm and authenticity inherent in such a property Georgia, the owner, has paid meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of the Gaiaandrsquo;s renovation. Her tireless efforts liaising with the architect and individual craftsmen have ensured her house is imbued with great charm and warmth.
Stepping inside, the rafters of the high ceilings in the large open plan living space create a cool, relaxing environment and are a perfect complement to the stylish, rustic dandeacute;cor. Open the French windows that lead onto the raised terrace and garden, relax on the comfortable sofas and enjoy mesmerizing views of the glittering Ionian Sea immediately ahead. Twin beds sit snugly under the eaves on the mezzanine overlooking the living area and the pretty Provencal-style double bedroom is decorated an appealing blend of beige and mauve.
Externally, pistachio-coloured shutters, the pointed roof and original thick stone walls are all indicative of the millandrsquo;s origins. An ancient crumbling wall outlines the original grounds and a tall majestic olive tree rises above the pretty stone paved terrace. The hammock tucked away in one corner simply invites indolence and the position of the lovely outdoor dining terrace takes full advantage of the views.
Mini-markets and local tavernas at Manganos village are just a few hundred metres away and Dafnoudi, a secluded pebble beach with an enticing cave at the bottom of a steep natural valley is only 2.5km. Excellent for snorkeling, the translucent waters of Emblisi Beach are 4km and Agia Jerusalem with a charming waterside tavernas is 7km.
